Brake fade can occur when service (foot) brakes are incorrectly used on steep and long hills.
The primary brakes referred to in road rule 108 are the service (foot) brakes.
The ‘low gear sign’ referred to in road rule 108 is a recommendation only.
Incorrect use of primary brakes on long and steep hills can lead to brake failure. This could cause a major accident leading to injury and death.
It is best to prepare early for the low gear area by slowing down, selecting the appropriate gear and turning on the engine brake or similar system BEFORE reaching the low gear sign.
Selecting a speed that is less that the speed limit may be required to control the vehicle speed without the use of the primary brake; thus, obey the law.
Among other things, when driving down low gear signed areas, it is important to monitor vehicle speed, engine RPM, engine temperatures, warning systems and following distance.
If a driver is inexperienced driving down long and steep descents, it would be shameful and inappropriate to reach out for assistance.
